Ukraine's latest encounter, which ended in a defeat for the side, has put behind the fine form with which they reworked their qualification campaign after their opening day defeat. The side fell victim to a two-nil defeat at home against France in their opening encounter before going on a three-game streak without defeat. Across that run, they took consecutive victories after the shock 1-1 stalemate with Azerbaijan. The highlight of those wins came with them ending up winners at the end of an eight-goal thriller on the road against Iceland. Their latest fixture has, however, handed them a second group phase defeat against the same French side they incurred their first.

Iceland's latest result has now helped the side put to bed a run of three straight games without a victory since their opening day win in Group D of the European World Cup Qualifiers. That victory came when they handed Azerbaijan a 5-nil thumping at home. The same side against which they secured just their second victory of the campaign in their latest fixture. Between those results, they suffered defeats against Ukraine and France and a 2-2 stalemate with the latter side to sum up their three games in that period. They currently pip their opposition in this encounter on goal difference as they look to lock down the group's play-off spot.
