Mexico have already secured an automatic ticket to next year's World Cup as one of the host countries. As a result, the side have gone through most of the year upping their preparations through international friendlies. However, that has not gone exactly to plan, with the side failing to take a victory in that stead since defeating Turkey by a lone-goal margin back in June. Mexico have failed to take a winning result over their past four international friendlies. They played out successive draws against Asian sides Japan (0-0) and South Korea (2-2). The more recent of those fixtures saw a 4-nil defeat against Colombia and a 1-1 draw with Ecuador.

Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay have also confirmed their spot in next summer's World Championships. They did that by finishing in fourth place in the South American World Cup Qualifiers. Uruguay took an impressive 28-point tally from their 18 encounters, level with third-placed Colombia and just one behind runners-up Ecuador. They lost just four of those encounters, emerged victors at full-time in seven of them, and played out as many stalemates. On the offensive front, they found the back of the net on 22 occasions and conceded just 12 times.
